The N-arylation of several types of amidic nitrogen atoms, including those found in carboxamides, sulfonamides, carboxylic acid imides, mixed carboxylic-sulfonic imides and hydantoin systems was carried out by treatment of their sodium salts with p-tolyllead triacetate in the presence of copper (II) acetate.

A general Cu-catalyzed, regioselective method for the N-3-arylation of hydantoins is described. The protocol utilizes aryl(trimethoxyphenyl)iodonium tosylate as the arylating agent in the presence of triethylamine and a catalytic amount of a simple Cu-salt. The method is compatible with structurally diverse hydantoins and operates well with neutral aryl groups or aryl groups bearing weakly donating/withdrawing

p-Tolyllead triacetate efficiently arylates the nitrogen atom of carboxamide, sulfonamide, imide, and hydantoin anions under mild conditions. This reaction did not interfere with the arylation of amino and beta-dicarbonyl groups.

Hydantoins, thiohydantoins, and glycocyamidines have been prepared in moderate to excellent yields at room temperature under solvent-free conditions. 3N-amino and carboamide derivatives of hydantoin (7-8) were prepared in single step by condensing benzil with semicarbazide and biuret respectively.
