  A method to protect the amino group of the amino acids using diethyl (ethoxymethylene)malonate is described. The resulting derivatives are easily esterified with different alkylation agents. Elimination of the N-protecting group with bromine in chloroform affords the hydrobromides of the amino acid esters.
