  The invention describes novel 1-arylimidazoles of formula (I), wherein typically preferred substituents are: X is S(O)nR₁, in which R₁ is unsubstituted or halo-substituted alkyl and n is 0, 1 or 2; Y is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, alkoxyalkylideneimino, alkylsulfenyl, alkylsulfinyl or alkylsulfonyl; Z is hydrogen or alkyl; R₂ is halogen or alkylsulfenyl; R₃ and R₅ are hydrogen; R₆ is halogen; and R₄ is hydrogen, halogen, haloalkyl or haloalkoxy.
