Following different paths: The cyclization of 1‐(benzyl‐, oxyaryl‐, thioaryl‐, and sylaaryl)‐2‐ethynylbenzenes under Brønsted acid‐ and Au(I)‐catalysis is described. While Au‐catalysis preferentially delivers seven‐membered rings, acid‐promoted cyclizations lead to the formation of anthracenes, pyrylium salts, and S‐(aryl)benzothiophenium salts.
