    Compounds and processes for catalytic ring-opening cyclooligomerization metathesis and ring-closing metathesis of olefins are described. The compound is a molybdenum or tungsten metal (M) complex which comprises an imido ligand (N—R) bound to the M to provide an M=N—R site, an M=C reaction site wherein the C of the M=C reaction site is tethered to the R of the imido ligand via a carbon or carbon and heteroatom (NOS) chain containing 1 to 12 carbon atoms to form a ring structure, and two to four ligands (R′) bound to the M to provide two to four M-R′ sites. In particular embodiments, the M-R′ sites include each of the oxygens of a dialkoxide ligand or each of the nitrogens of an η 1 -pyrrolyl ligand bound to the M.

    Polyolefin/clay nanocomposites with an exfoliated structure are prepared by a process which employs a specific chain end functionalized polyolefin that serves as the clay/polyolefin interfacial compatibilizer (or polymeric surfactant). The polyolefin contains a hydrophilic terminal functional group and an unperturbed hydrophobic high molecular weight polymer chain. The reaction may be carried out in a melt or solution process. Also disclosed are materials made by the process. Also disclosed are materials made by the process.

    The invention relates to a phosphonium borate compound represented by Formula (I) (hereinafter, the compound (I)). The invention has objects of providing (A) a novel process whereby the compound is produced safely on an industrial scale, by simple reaction operations and in a high yield; (B) a novel compound that is easily handled; and (C) novel use as catalyst. Formula (I): (R 1 )(R 2 )(R 3 )PH.BAr 4 (I) wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and Ar are as defined in the specification. The process (A) includes reacting a phosphine with a) HCl or b) H 2 SO 4 to produce a) a hydrochloride or b) a sulfate; and reacting the salt with a tetraarylborate compound. The compound (B) has for example a secondary or tertiary alkyl group as R 1 and is easily handled in air without special attention. The use (C) is characterized in that the compound (I) is used instead of an unstable phosphine compound of a transition metal complex catalyst for catalyzing C—C bond, C—N bond and C—O bond forming reactions and the compound produces an effect that is equal to that achieved by the transition metal complex catalyst.
