aqueous NH4OH, in most cases in conjunction with O2 or K2S2O8 as auxiliary oxidant, induces oxidative cleavage of ketones to nitriles when there is a good carbon electrofuge; for unactivated ketones, the main reaction observed is oxidative coupling of ketimines to give azines.
