Sulfonylchlorides were reduced to anhydrous sulfinate salts with magnesium under sonication. These sulfinates were alkylated to sulfones with alkyl chlorides in the presence of catalytic sodium iodide under sonication. A variety of aliphatic sulfones was efficiently prepared by this one-pot two-step procedure.

A direct and efficient approach for palladium-catalyzed arylation of aryl and alkyl methyl sulfones with aryl bromides has been developed. The catalytic system affords arylated sulfones in good to excellent yields (73–90%).

Abstract A palladium-catalyzedcross-coupling of benzyl trimethylammonium triflates and sulfonyl hydrazides for the synthesis of various benzyl sulfones is reported. This novel protocol shows widespread functional group tolerance, leading to the desired sulfones in moderate to excellent yields.

photoredox-catalyzed one-pot sulfone preparation is reported from alkyl bromides activated by silane-mediated halogen atom transfer. In the process, a previously unutilized SO2 adduct bis(piperidine) sulfurdioxide– or PIPSO – was found to be the best source of SO2 for radical capture under the reaction conditions. Alkyl and aryl sulfones were prepared as well as sulfonylated APIs.
