  The preparation of 5-dimethylaminoindole is described. This compound underwent the usual reactions typical of 3-unsubstituted indoles, and various 3-substituted derivatives were prepared. Syntheses for 5-dimethylaminotryptophan, 5-dimethylaminotryptamine, 5-dimethylamino-N,N-dimethyltryptamine, and 5-dimethylamino-α-methyltryptamine are reported.
