A simple method was developed for selective para-cyanation of alkoxy- and benzyloxy-substituted benzenes with 0.5 equivalents of potassium ferricyanide, 0.8 equivalants of copper(II) nitrate and 0.5 equivalents of iodine in acetonitrile. Among various phenyl carbon-hydrogen bonds, those at the para-position with regard to the alkoxy or benzyloxy groups were selectively cyanated in 20% to 87% yields

The present invention provides a catalyst composition and a method for producing an olefin polymer using the catalyst composition. The catalyst composition is prepared by bringing (A) a transition metal compound, (B) a solid boron compound capable of forming an ion pair with the component (A), (C) an organometallic compound and (D) a compound represented by the following general formula (XIV) and/or the following general formula (XV) into contact with each other in a hydrocarbon solvent, and enables a high catalyst concentration.

Bearing grease includes an ether base oil and a urea thickener, and is used in an atmosphere of a fluorine compound-based refrigerant. No grease is eluted for a long period in a bearing with use of the bearing grease. Moreover, since a collection system is unnecessary unlike a lubricating oil, the surroundings of the bearing can be made compact. Accordingly, the bearing with use of the bearing grease is easily applicable to automobiles and a variety of industrial machinery as an energy collection apparatus using the Rankine cycle.

AbstractNitrogen dioxide is demonstrated to be an effective catalyst precursor for the iodination of alkoxy‐substituted benzenes and naphthalenes. Different from the transition metal catalysts, nitrogen dioxide can be easily separated from the final products, and is free of heavy metal waste. Although the present catalyst precursor is toxic, it does not stain the final products due to its low‐boiling character. No other reagents apart from 0.5 equiv. of iodine (I2), 6.5 mol% nitrogen dioxide and acetonitrile solvent were used in the iodination, and basically all the iodine atoms in the iodine source were transferred to the iodination products, showing that the presented protocol is highly atom‐economic and practical.magnified image
Sign inversion of the helical pitch in carbohydrate-based liquid crystals
A four-step synthesis starting from tri-O-acetyl-D-glucal leads to chiral trioxadecalin compounds containing a cyano group. The mesogenic properties of a homologous series of liquid crystals are reported; for two derivatives a helix inversion of the cholesteric phase is observed.
