Λ-Type Regioregular Oligothiophenes: Synthesis and Second-Order NLO Properties

The synthesis of a new series of Lambda-type, D-Pi-A regioregular oligothiophenes is described. The simultaneous presence of the chiral centers and the Lambda-type structure disfavored the formation of centro-symmetrical dimeric assemblies. Hence, enhanced first hyperpolarizabilities beta(HRS) were measured in comparison with those of the corresponding monomers.
A new series of oligomers consisting of thiophene as p-type unit and oxadiazole as n-type unit were synthesized, and their photophysical and electrochemical properties were evaluated. Cyclic voltammography studies demonstrated that the electronic properties of the p–ndiblockoligomers could be modulated by changing the number of thiophene and oxadiazole rings. The molecular regiochemical effect to
modulate the electronic properties of the p−ndiblock and triblockoligomers. The effect of molecular regiochemistry on electronic properties is also investigated. The observed electronic properties were consistent with theoretical calculations. These systems serve as excellent examples, demonstrating the band gap control principle in the p−n heterostructure oligomers.
Don't stand Stille: A directheteroarylation polycondensation reaction was used for the synthesis of high‐molecular‐weight thienopyrroledione‐based polymers (see scheme) in an impressive yield (up to 96 %) and in only a few synthetic steps. This new method is an alternative to the standard Stille coupling reaction and thus avoids formation of toxic tin by‐products.

The inventions disclosed, described, and/or claimed herein relate to copolymers comprising copolymers comprising electron accepting A subunits that comprise thiazolothiazole, benzobisthiazole, or benzobisoxazoles rings, and electron donating subunits that comprise certain heterocyclic groups. The copolymers are useful for manufacturing organic electronic devices, including transistors and solar cells. The invention also relates to certain synthetic precursors of the copolymers. Methods for making the copolymers and the derivative electronic devices are also described.

Disclosed are new semiconductor materials prepared from dithienylvinylene copolymers with aromatic or heteroaromatic π-conjugated systems. Such copolymers, with little or no post-deposition heat treatment, can exhibit high charge carrier mobility and/or good current modulation characteristics. In addition, the polymers of the present teachings can possess certain processing advantages such as improved solution-processability and low annealing temperature.
