    Three-component and one-pot, reaction between 4-hydroxy-6-methyl-2H-pyran-2-one, Meldrum's acid and aryl aldehydes in the presence of piperidine affords 4-aryl-7-methyl-3,4-dihydropyrano[4,3-b]pyran-2,5-dione in excellent yields.

    The mildly basic ionic liquid N,N,N,N-tetramethylguanidinium triflate (TMGTf) was found to be a very effective solvent for the reaction between 4-hydroxy-6-methyl-2H-pyran-2-one, Meldrum's acid, and aldehydes to afford some novel pyrano[4,3-b]pyran-2,5-diones in high yields at room temperature. The stages, through which these reactions might proceed, depend largely on the nature of the aldehyde substrates. The reaction of aliphatic aldehydes has given access to some novel carboxylated products. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalyzed lactonization and lactamization of 2-bromoenals with heterocyclic C–H acids proceeding via the α,β-unsaturated acyl azolium intermediates is reported. The reaction furnished coumarin- or quinolinone-fused lactone/lactam derivatives. In addition, results of the enantioselective version of this reaction using chiral NHC are presented.
