In a process for preparing .omega.-hydroxyesters of .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated carboxylic acids, a vinyloxy ester of the carboxylic acid is treated with a strong acid in the presence of an alcohol, in particular a 1,2-diol or 1,3-diol.
