  A new and general one-pot transformation of aromatic aldehydes to fluorinated olefins containing -CH=C(Cl)CF3 or -CH=C(F)CClF2 moieties is described. Freons CCl3CF3 and CCl2FCCIF2 were used as trifluoromethyl and difluoromethyl C-2-building blocks respectively. A proposed mechanism for the reaction is discussed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd.   There are described compounds of formula: in which X (or X') = H, F, Cl and X' (or X) = F, Cl; with R' = H, Cl, Br, F an optionally halogen-substituted alkyl C1-C3; R' = halogen, an optionally halogen-substituted alkyl C1-C3; R4 =H or R3; R' = H, halogen, an optionally halogen-substituted alkyl C1-C3, OCH3, SCH3, OCF3; n = an integer from 1 to 4. The compounds of formula I are endowed with a high insecticide activity which is mainly exerted against insects' larvae and eggs.

  The improved one-pot Wittig reaction had been used to prepare trifluoromethyl-containing olefins under solvent-free conditions. Treatment of aldehydes with PPh3 and CF3CCl3 in the presence of K2CO3 at 100C afforded 2-chloro-1,1,1-trifluoro-2-alkenes in good to moderate yields.
