Heterocyclic aldehydes (A) reacted with alkyl aryl ketones (B) to give the corresponding 1,3-diaryl-2-propen-1-ones (Ia-1). Condensation of these chalcones with guanidine produced the corresponding 2-amino-4,6-diarylpyrimidines (IIa-1). The structure of all products was substantiated by chemical and spectroscopic methods.

A simple and fast methodology under microwave irradiation for the synthesis of 2-aminopyrimidine and pyrazole derivatives using Atwal reaction is reported. After the optimization of the reaction conditions, eight 2-aminolpyrimidines containing ferrocene and heterocycles and three ferrocene pyrazoles were synthesized from the respective chalcones in good yields.
