Transformation of D-glucosamine into the p-nitrobenzylester (2) of SQ27860 is described, revealing the absoluteconfiguration of this carbapenem antibiotic as (1).

Two new β-lactams (4b) and (5b), and (3S,5R)-carbapenam-3-carboxylicacid, have been isolated from strains of Serratia and Erwinia spp.; their possible role, and that of (5R)-carbapen-2-em-3-carboxylic acid as intermediates in the biosynthesis of the more complex members of the carbapenem family of β-lactam antibiotics is discussed.

Racemic and enantiomeric p-nitrobenzyl carbapen-2-em-3-carboxylates 3, 3a, and 3b were prepared starting from inexpensive sorbic acid through the key intermediates, azetidinone esters 4, thus establishing a total synthesis of the p-nitrobenzylester of a natural product SQ 27,860. Optical resolution was achieved readily on azetidinone menthyl esters, 12. The absoluteconfigurations were also established
