N-(p-toluenesulfonyl)imidazole in the presence of triethylamine in DMF at 100 °C afforded the corresponding amides in good to excellent yields. N-(p-Toluenesulfonyl)imidazole proved to be a highly efficient coupling reagent for the preparation of numerous structurally diverse primary, secondary and tertiary amides.

Mesoporous silica MCM-41 as a highly active, recoverable and reusable catalyst for direct amidation of fatty acids and long-chain amines

Direct amidation of fattyacids with long-chain amines was successfully performed by mesoporous silica MCM-41, which showed the highest catalytic activity among other used homo- and heterogeneous catalysts. It was found that MCM-41 can be easily recovered from the reaction mixture followed by simple calcination treatment and reused without loss of its catalytic activity.
Synthesis of alkyl, aryl, heterocyclic, carbohydrate and amino acid amides using activated zinc is described. The recovery and reuse of the zinc makes the procedure more economic. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
