Four chelating nitrogen ligands 2-5 derived from N,N-bis(2-picolyl)amine (bpa, 1) were synthesized, namely, (PyCH(2))(2)N-CH(2)-p-C(6)H(4)-CO(2)R (R = Me, 2, and R = H, 3) and (PyCH(2))(2)N-(CH(2))(n)-CO(2)H (n = 2, 4, and n = 5, 5).
