Abstract The synthesis of bis(oxazolidinone)polyoxyethylene derivatives 2a–h fromoligoethyleneglycols diglycidyl ethers 1a–e and isocyanates is reported. The reaction was achieved by lithium bromide and tributylphosphine oxide. These bis‐oxazolidinones may have important antibacterial activity.

The ring-opening reaction of oligoethylene glycol diglycidyl ethers using three fluorinating reagents has been realized. High regioselectivity and the greatest yields of bisfluorohydrins were obtained with potassium hydrogen fluoride.

The invention provides a coating varnish composition comprising (A) a polymer obtained by polymerizing (a) at least one unsaturated acid anhydride and (b) at least one other unsaturated monomer, and (B) at least one additive selected from triazole derivatives, benzothiazole derivatives, thiadiazole derivatives, polyethers and carboxylic acid anhydride derivatives and an antifouling coating composition comprising said coating varnish and an antifouling agent containing a coppercompound as major component. Using such compositions the risks of poisoning associated with organotin copolymers are avoided and there are obtained coatings of a coating consuming property and antifouling performance comparable with those of the organotin copolymers which do not gel even when mixed with a copper compound.

The present invention provides an epoxy resin having a low melting point, low melt viscosity, excellent solvent solubility, and excellent processability. Also, the present invention provides an epoxy resin composition and a cured product thereof having excellent fluidity, processability, flexibility, adhesion, and thermal conductivity. The epoxy resin is represented by general formula (I) below (Q: an alkylene chain having a C1-C9 linear part which may have a C1-C18 alkyl group in a side chain, or a linkage chain having an ether bond present between two continuous methylene groups in the alkylene chain; A: a phenylene unit in which 2 to 4 phenylene groups are bonded directly or through a linkage chain, or a naphthylene unit, n: 0 to 10). The epoxy resin composition contains the epoxy resin and a curing agent. The composition includes the epoxy resin.

The reaction of bis-oxiranes 1 with carbon disulfide in the presence of lithium bromide as catalyst at reflux in dichloromethane affords selectively the corresponding polyoxyethylene bis (five-menbered cyclic dithiocarbonates) 2 in good yields. On the basis of the reaction conditions, an oriented mechanism for the reaction is proposed.
