Acyclic or cyclic O,O-acetals and O,S-acetals underwent reductivecleavage to give primary alcohols efficiently on treatment with Zn-CoCl2.6H2O-bimetal redox system in dry tetrahydrofuran at ambient temperature to give good to excellent yields.

Tetrabutylammonium bromide in the molten state has been demonstrated to be a very efficient catalyst and reaction medium for the highly chemoselective dithioacetalization and oxathioacetalization of aldehydes. The tetrabutylammonium bromide is recycled for subsequent reactions.

Methods of inhibiting the cytokine or biological activity of Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor (MIF) comprising contacting MIF with a compound of formula (I) are provided.
