units. The reaction afforded a mixture of macrocyclic homologues from which a two-membered macrocycle was isolated as the main product. Two disastereomers of the macrocycle were separated and characterized by means of NMRspectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Conformational changes of these diastereomers were investigated using DFT models and variable-temperature NMR.

These novel derivatives can be used for the selective removing of various compounds from solutions in polar and nonpolar solvents, and from water, e.g. for water purification and desalination, also for separation of liquid mixtures and mixtures of gases and organic solvent vapors, preparation of ion-exchange materials and materials which are used as stationary phase in chromatography, construction of sensors, transport and targeting of drugs in organisms, and also preparation of materials bearing aromatic or curative compounds.

The X ray structure of DHI, an intermediate in the synthesis of glycoluril from urea and glyoxal is reported; it gives 1- and 1,3-substituted glycolurils not available from unsubstituted glycoluril.
