Carbohydrates, such as fructose, can be fully dehydroxylated to 2,5‐dimethyltetrahydrofuran (DMTHF), a valuable chemical and potential gasoline substitute, by the use of a dual catalytic system consisting of HI and RhX3 (X=Cl, I).
