    A method for producing polymerisable solution which comprises dissolving an ethylenically unsaturated zwitterionic monomer in a co-monomer system comprising a functionalised ethylenically unsaturated monomer in which the zwitterionic monomer is soluble, a siloxane group-containing monomer or macromer, and a crosslinking agent is disclosed.     Electrically-conductive silver metal can be provided in a thin film or pattern on a substrate from a silver complex having reducing silver ions and represented by: (Ag + ) a (L) b (P) c (I) wherein L represents an α-oxy carboxylate; P represents a 5- or 6-membered N-heteroaromatic compound; a is 1 or 2; b is 1 or 2; and c is 1, 2, 3, or 4, provided that when a is 1, b is 1, and when a is 2, b is 2. The silver complex is mixed in a hydroxy-free, nitrile-containing aprotic solvent with a polymer that is either (i) a hydroxy-containing cellulosic polymer or (ii) a non-cellulosic acrylic polymer having a halo- or hydroxy-containing side chain. The reducible silver ions in the a thermally sensitive thin film or pattern can be thermally converted to electrically-conductive metallic silver under suitable heating conditions to provide a product article that can be used in various devices.

    A one-pot process for the preparation of functional alkoxyamines of the general formula (I), 1 is disclosed. The process entails (1) reacting an oxidizing agent with a sterically hindered secondary amine to produce an aqueous phase and a nitroxyl radical (2) removing the aqueous phase and adding to the nitroxyl radical one or more vinyl monomer(s) conforming to a formula and a system which produces free radicals. Also disclosed is a process of polymerizing monomers using the functional alkoxyamine.

    Copolymers comprising: (a) 60 to 99% by weight of at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of N-vinyllactams, N-vinylamides, and mixtures thereof; (1) 1 to 40% by weight of at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of vinyl esters of aliphatic branched C 8 -C 30 -carboxylic acids; (c) 0 to 30% by weight of vinyl acetate; and (d) 0 to 39% by weight of at least one additional free-radically copolymnerizable monomer; wherein the % by weight content of components (a), (b), (c) and (d) totals 100%, and with the proviso that the total amount of component (b) and component (c) combined is 1 to 40% by weight based on the copolymer, are described along with methods of using such copolymers to solubilize substances which are insoluble in water, substances which are only sparingly soluble in water, and combinations thereof.
