The synthesis and characterization of a series of phthalocyanine derivatives bearing phosphonate substituents directly bound to the aromatic rings of the phthalocyanine is described. These novel water-soluble phthalocyanine tetraphosphonates are of interest for different applications, particularly as photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy.
