    It has been determined that 1,2,3-trialkoxybenzenes and 1,2,4-trialkoxybenzenes can be utilized in order to increase the vinyl content of polydienes which are prepared utilizing lithium catalyst systems. For instance, it has been determined that 1,2,3-trimethoxybenzene and 1,2,4-trimethoxybenzene are very strong modifiers for utilization in such polymerizations. The utilization of the trialkoxybenzene modifiers of the present invention is highly advantageous because they promote fast polymerization rates and can be used to produce polymers having high vinyl contents.

    It is important for tire treads to exhibit good wet skid resistance, low rolling resistance, good wear characteristics and good abrasion resistance. This is often accomplished by utilizing a blend of various rubbers in making tire tread compositions. However, some of the desirable characteristics of the individual rubbers in the blend are frequently lost on mixing. The segmented elastomers of this invention offer a unique combination of desirable characteristics for utilization in making tire tread compositions. This invention more specifically discloses a rubber polymer which has an excellent combination of properties for use in making tire treads which is comprised of: (a) a first segment which is comprised of repeat units which are derived from isoprene having a microstructure wherein there are from about 75% to about 98% 1,4-linkages and from about 2% to about 25% 3,4-linkages and wherein the first segment has a number average molecular weight which is within the range of about 25,000 to about 350,000; and (b) a second segment which is comprised of repeat units which are derived from 30 to 95 weight percent 1,3-butadiene and from 5 to 70 weight percent styrene, wherein the sum of (1) the product of 1.7 and the weight percent of styrene in the second segment and (2) the percentage of 1,2-butadiene linkages in the second segment is within the range of about 50% to about 92%, and wherein the second segment has a number average molecular weight which is within the range of about 50,000 to about 350,000.

    The subject invention discloses an isoprene-butadiene diblock rubber which is particularly valuable for use in making treads for tires which have improved wear characteristics without compromising traction characteristics or rolling resistance. Said isoprene-butadiene diblock rubber is comprised of (1) a first block which is comprised of repeat units which are derived from 1,3-butadiene and (2) a second block which is comprised of repeat units which are derived from both 1,3-butadiene and isoprene, wherein the repeat units derived from isoprene and 1,3-butadiene in the second block are in an essentially random order, wherein the diblock rubber has a glass transition temperature which is within the range of about -100°C to about -70°C, and wherein the diblock rubber has a Mooney viscosity which is within the range of about 50 to about 140. In cases where the isoprene-butadiene diblock rubber of this invention is employed in automobile tires it will preferably have a second glass transition temperature which is within the range of about -50°C to about 0°C. The Mooney viscosity will preferably be within the range of about 80 to about 135 and in the case of oil extended polymers will more preferably be within the range of about 100 to about 130 before oil extension.

    The subject invention discloses a pneumatic tire having an outer circumferential tread wherein said tread is a sulfur-cured rubber composition comprised of (a) an isoprene-butadiene diblock rubber, said isoprene-butadiene diblock rubber being comprised of a butadiene block and an isoprene-butadiene block, wherein said butadiene block has a number average molecular weight which is within the range of about 25,000 to about 350,000, wherein said isoprene-butadiene block has a number average molecular weight which is within the range of about 25,000 to about 350,000, wherein said isoprene-butadiene diblock rubber has essentially one glass transition temperature which is within the range of about -100°C to about -70°C, wherein said isoprene-butadiene diblock polymer has a Mooney ML-4 viscosity at 100°C which is within the range of about 50 to about 140, and wherein the repeat units derived from isoprene and 1,3-butadiene in the isoprene-butadiene block are in essentially random order; and (b) a second rubber selected from the group consisting of high vinyl polybutadiene rubber, styrene-isoprene-butadiene rubber, solution styrene-butadiene rubber and emulsion styrene-butadiene rubber.

  • Technique for reducing the cold flow of rubbers

    Cold flow is a problem that is commonly encountered in the handling and storage of low molecular weight linear rubbers, such as low vinyl polybutadiene rubber and isoprene-butadiene rubber. This invention is based upon the unexpected discovery that the cold flow of such rubbery polymers can be greatly reduced by incorporating a small block of polystyrene therein. The rubbery polymers of this invention which exhibit a low level of cold flow can be synthesized by simply terpolymerizing 1,3-butadiene, isoprene and from about 0.5 phm to about 3 phm of styrene under anionic polymerization conditions in the absence of a polar modifier. It is preferred to utilize batch polymerization techniques. However, continuous polymerization techniques can also be utilized. This invention more specifically disclosed a rubbery polymer which is comprised of polymer chains containing repeat units which are derived from 1,3-butadiene, isoprene and from about 0.5 weight percent to about 3 weight percent styrene, wherein the repeat units which are derived from styrene are in blocks at the ends of the polymer chains, wherein the rubbery polymer has a glass transition temperature which is within the range of about -105°C to about -65°C and wherein the rubbery polymer has a number average molecular weight which is within the range of about 50,000 to about 600,000.
