Methyleneketenes 2 and imidoylketenes 4, generated from Meldrum'sacid derivatives 1 and 2,3-dihydropyrrole-2,3-diones 3, respectively, both rearrange thermally to oxoketenimines 5; the imidoylketene–oxoketenimine rearrangement is reversible and much accelerated by electropositive migrating groups (SMe).

The cycloadditionreaction of the pyrrol-2,3-diones 1a–e to equimolar amount of diazomethane gave 2-aryl(methyl)-2-azabicyclo[3.1.0]hexane 3a–e together with 5,6-dioxo-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrazole derivatives 4a–e. While 1a-e reacted with an excess of diazomethane to give the corresponding N-methyl derivatives 5a-e with a minor amount of 3a-e. Treatment of 4a-e with excess of diazomethane gave 5a-e quantitatively
