  4- 芳基氮杂环丁-2-酮（δ-内酰胺）与三氟甲酸开环生成肉桂酰胺，肉桂酰胺在苯中进一步反应生成 3-芳基-3-苯基丙酰胺。在苯中延长反应时间，通过芳基/苯基交换得到 3,3-二苯基丙酰胺。环径为 7 或更大的内酰胺也能开环，但只有 7 和 8 元环才能生成纯的二苯基烷基酰胺。AlCl3 只能使 4-芳基氮杂环丁酮开环。
