The snythesis of novel hybrid transition state analogs, a combination of phosphinic acid- and hydroxy-methylene-type inhibitors of HIV protease, is demonstrated. These nonsymmetrical structures, placed in a peripheric C2-symmetrical environment, inhibit HIV protease in the lower nanomolar range.
