  A process for the preparation of a 2-cyano-3,3-dimethyl-cyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid ester of the formula ##STR1## in which R is optionally substituted alkyl, comprising reacting a 3-halogeno-3-cyano-2,2-dimethyl-propane-1-carboxylic acid ester of the formula ##STR2## in which X is halogen, with a base at a temperature from about 0 to 100.degree. C. The starting esters are new and may be prepared by halogenating a compound of the formula ##STR3## and decarboxylating.
