    The highly unsaturated aldehyde (9Z)-9,13-tetradecadien-11-ynal and the corresponding alcohol were identified as possible sex pheromone components of the avocado seed moth, Stenoma catenifer. The aldehyde as a single component attracted more male moths than caged virgin female moths, and addition of the analogous alcohol and/or acetate decreased attraction. A stereospecific synthesis of the pheromone is described. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    A process for preparing a dienynal compound of the following general formula (2): CH 2 ═CHC≡CCH═CH(CH 2 ) n CHO (2), wherein n represents an integer of 0 to 11, the process comprising a step of hydrolyzing a dialkoxyalkadienyne compound of the following general formula (1): CH 2 ═CHC≡CCH═CH(CH 2 ) n CH(OR 1 )(OR 2 ) (1) wherein R 1 and R 2 represent, independently of each other, a monovalent hydrocarbon group having 1 to 15 carbon atoms, preferably 1 to 8, mere preferably 1 to 4, or R 1 and R 2 may be bonded to each other to form a divalent hydrocarbon group, R 1 -R 2 , having from 2 to 10 carbon atoms, and n represents an integer of 0 to 11, to obtain the dienynal compound (2).

    A process for preparing a dienynal compound of the following general formula (2): CH2═CHC≡CCH═CH(CH2)nCHO  (2), wherein n represents an integer of 0 to 11, the process comprising a step of hydrolyzing a dialkoxyalkadienyne compound of the following general formula (1): CH2═CHC≡CCH═CH(CH2)nCH(OR1)(OR2)  (1) wherein R1 and R2 represent, independently of each other, a monovalent hydrocarbon group having 1 to 15 carbon atoms, preferably 1 to 8, more preferably 1 to 4, or R1 and R2 may be bonded to each other to form a divalent hydrocarbon group, R1-R2, having from 2 to 10 carbon atoms, and n represents an integer of 0 to 11, to obtain the dienynal compound (2).

More specifically, there are provided a composition bioactive to Stenoma catenifer (STENCA), the composition including (9Z)-9,13-tetradecadien-11-ynal and (9E)-9,13-tetradecadien-11-ynal; a sustained release preparation for controlling STENCA, the preparation including the composition and a carrier or container for sustainedly releasing the (9Z)-9,13-tetradecadien-11-ynal and the (9E)-9,13-tetradecadien-11-ynal; and a method for controlling STENCA, the method including a step of installing the sustained release preparation in a field to release the (9Z)-9,13-tetradecadien-11-ynal and the (9E)-9,13-tetradecadien-11-ynal into the field.
