One-pot, three-component reactions of isoquinoline, dimethyl/diethyl acetylenedicarboxylate, and indole, carbazole, pyrazole, or imidazole gave dimethyl/diethyl 2-(1-(1H-indol-1-yl)isoquinolin-2(1H)-yl)but-2-enedioate, dimethyl/diethyl 2-(1-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)isoquinolin-2(1H)-yl)but-2-enedioate, dimethyl 2-(1-(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)isoquinolin-2(1H)-yl)but-2-enedioate, or dimethyl 2-(1-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)isoquinolin-2(1H)-yl)but-2-enedioate respectively in good to excellent yields.

A straightforward and efficient method for the synthesis of 1,2‐dihydroisoquinolines via a one‐pot, three‐componentreaction of isoquinoline, activatedacetylenes, and NH‐acids in water at 70°C without using any catalyst is reported. The method offers several advantages including high yields of products and an easy workup procedure. J. Heterocyclic Chem., (2012).
