Three ring circus: The title reaction can efficiently provide functionalized polycycliccompounds containing cyclobutene (see scheme; PG=protecting group) or aza‐cyclooctene moieties in a highly regio‐ and diastereoselective manner with moderate to good yields under mild reaction conditions. The scope and limitations are disclosed and plausible reaction mechanisms are discussed.
