Advantageously, upon hydrolysis of an internal ester bond, which is likely to occur under typical in vivo conditions, a zwitterionic lipid structure is obtained, which is no longer capable of complexing a nucleic acid, which will thus be released from the lipid nanoparticle and subsequently is able to perform its therapeutic function.
