An approach to fluorinated surface coatings via photoinitiated cationic cross-linking of mixed epoxy and fluoroepoxy systems

The synthesis and characterisation of four polyfluorinated monoepoxides is described. These fluoroepoxy monomers were cationically polymerised either neat or as mixtures with diglycidylether of bisphenol-A using the initiator system (CH3CH2)(3)Al/H2O (2/1) or the photoinitiator Ph2I+, PF6-. Contact angle measurements indicated that, in favourable cases, the fluorinated epoxide monomer surface segregated at low loadings to give significant lowering of the surface free energy of photocured films of diglycidylether of bisphenol-A. The geometric isomerism and tautomeric equilibrium of 5-fluoroalkyl-3-acetyldihydrofuran-2(3H)-ones obtained by condensation of (perfluoroalkyl)methyloxiranes with acetoacetic ester were studied. In the solid state the acyl-gamma-lactones are in diketo form, mainly as cis isomer, whose structure is confirmed by the data of X-ray structural investigation, while in solution an equilibrium exists of cis-trans isomers and an enol form, as established by 1D and 2D methods of H-1, C-13, and F-19 NMR spectroscopy.
