    A method for producing a modified polyphenylene oxide is described which comprises polymerizing 69 to 25 parts by weight of a mixture of 97 to 45% by weight of a styrene monomer and 3 to 55% by weight of a polar vinyl monomer at 90° to 190 °C using 0.3 to 10 parts by weight of a radical initiator in an aqueous dispersion containing a dispersion stabilizer alone or in combination with at least one of a surfactant and an adhesion-preventing agent in the presence of 31 to 75 parts by weight of a polyphenylene oxide having a unit structure of the formula, wherein Ri, R2, R3 and R4 are each a hydrogen or halogen atom, or a hydrocarbon, substituted hydrocarbon, cyano, hydrocarbonoxy, substituted hydrocarbonoxy, nitro or amino group.

    Disclosed herein is a thermoplastic resin composition which comprises: (a) a polyphenylene ether resin or a polyphenylene ether-­containing resin composition, (b) a polypropylene grafted with a styrene-based monomer and/or a propylene copolymer grafted with a styrene-­based monomer, (c) an ethylene-α-olefin copolymer grafted with a styrene-based monomer, said ethylene-α-olefin copo­lymer having a density of 0.85-0.91 g/cm³ and a maximum melting peak temperature of 100°C and above measured with a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and (d) an optional rubbery substance. Also disclosed herein is a process a process for pro­ducing a thermoplastic resin composition which comprises incorporating a preblend composed of: (a′) a polyphenylene ether resin or a polyphenylene ether-­containing resin composition, (b′) a polypropylene and/or a propylene copolymer, (c′) an ethylene-α-olefin copolymer having a density of 0.85-0.91 g/cm³ and a maximum melting peak temperature of 100°C and above measured with a differential scan­ning calorimeter (DSC), and (d′) an optional rubbery substance with a styrene-based monomer and an organic peroxide, followed by kneading with heating. The thermoplastic resin composition has good mold­ability and yields molded articles having well-balanced physical properties.

    A modified propylene polymer having an average number of graft chains of 1 to 10 per molecule of propylene polymer, a weight-average degree of polymerization of the graft chain of 1 to 100 and a weight-average molecular weight of 1,000 to 500,000, said modified polymer being produced by the graft copolymerization of a propylene polymer with a specified amount of a combination of specified monomers selected among styrenic monomers, amine monomers and aminated styrenic monomers; and a thermoplastic resin composition comprising said modified polymer and a polyphenylene ether modified with a compound having a functional group which can react with an amino group. The modified propylene polymer is excellent in coatability, antistatic property and mechanical properties and is useful as a molding and an alloying agent for polymers, while the thermoplastic resin composition is excellent in strength and heat resistance.

    A thermoplastic resin composition containing (A) 100 parts by weight of at least one modified polyphenylene ether selected from the group consisting of (A1) a modified polyphenylene ether having repeating units of the formula (1): in which R₁ and R₂ are, independently from each other, a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms and having a number average polymerization degree of 20 to 1200, in which 0.02/X to 1/X of methyl groups at the 2- and/or 6-positions of phenylene group are modified to an aminomethyl group in which X is a number average polymerization degree and (A2) a modified polyphenylene ether comprising polyphenylene ether to which an amino group-containing monomer is graft polymerized, and (B) 0.1 to 70 parts by weight of an epoxy group-containing ethylene copolymer comprising (a) 50 to 99 % by weight of ethylene units, (b) 0.1 to 30 % by weight of unsaturated carboxylic acid diglycidyl ester units or unsaturated glycidyl ether units and (c) 0 to 50 % by weight of ethylenically unsaturated ester compound units, which composition has improved molding processability and impact resistance.
