isoindoloisoquinolinones, pyrroloisoquinolinones, and benzo[a]quinolizinones were successfully assembled from the corresponding imides by using a TfOH-mediated (TfOH = trifluoromethanesulfonic acid) imide carbonyl activation and cyclization strategy.
