Azo heterocyclic compounds that are substantially non-fluorescent or only weakly fluorescent useful as energy acceptors. The chemically reactive compounds possess utility for labeling a wide variety of substances, including biomolecules with the resulted conjugates being highly useful for a variety of energy-transfer assays and applications.
