The intramolecularphotochemical [2+ 2]-cycloaddition of N-substituted dimethacrylimides 1a and 1c, respectively, proceeds under conditions of direct irradiation (λ = 254 nm) as well as triplet photosensitization highly regioselectively yielding predominantly the «cross» bonding (head-to-tail) cycloadducts 3a and 3c, respectively, with a 3-azabicyclo [3.1.1]heptane ring system.

Upon irradiation N-methylmethacrylimide (1a) cyclized to give cis-1,3,5-trimethyl-3-azabicyclo[3.2.0]heptane-2,4-dione (2a) in a yield of 66%. 2a gave 1,2-dimethylcyclobutane-cis-1,2-dicarboxylic acid by alkaline hydrolysis. Several other acrylimide derivatives were found to give similar results upon irradiation.

The present invention relates to novel polymers, which are based on poly(vinyl ester) copolymers and poly(vinyl alcohol) copolymers having excellent thermal properties because of their special composition and to the use of said polymers.
The poly(vinyl alcohol-polyalkene) copolymers and polymer mixtures obtained in this way are characterized by a strongly modified melting behavior compared to linear poly(vinyl alcohols).
