A Synthesis of Vitamin A According to the Sulfone Method.Starting from β‐ionyl phenyl sulfone 7 and an appropriate allylic chloride 10 retinol 14 has been prepared by a direct procedure. Subsequent acetylation and isomerization led to crystalline all‐E‐vitamin A acetate 16.
A novel synthesis (the sulfone method) of carotenoidal alkylidenebutenolides is described together with spectral characterization of the latter.

The preparation of a novel vicinal difluorinated retinal analog is described. The key difluoroolefinic intermediate in the synthesis was prepared by the reaction of DAST with ethyl acetoacetate.
A short step synthesis of cyclopentatrienylidene retinals [(9)-(11)] is reported and the formation of the novel rhodopsin analogue (12) from the isomer (9) is described.
