Selective bacterial growth media can be used to screen a mixture of bacteria for the target species of interest in which the target species grow but the commensal bacteria are inhibited. The novel media components are pro-inhibitors which are present as non-toxic precursors, which are taken up by and chemically altered, e.g. by an enzyme or some other metabolic process, to release the antibacterial products in commercial bacteria. The target species, however, are capable of growing in the medium. The preferred embodiment provided uses peptidyl or aminoacyl derivatives of an antibacterial agent. Suitably the antibacterial agent is fosfalin (1-aminoethylphosphonic acid) and the derivative is alafosfalin (L-alanyl-1-aminoethylphosphonic acid). This suicide substrate inhibits growth in commensal bacterial such as E.coli when screening for Salmonella species.
