  [(S)R,1E,3E]-4-p-Tolylsulfinyl-1-X-1,3-butadienes 1 (X = CO(2)Me, CN, PO(OEt)(2), SO2 Ph, SEt) are synthesized from a common starting material, [(S)R]-3-p-tolylsulfinyl-2-propenal 2, through a Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reaction with the phosphonate (XCH(2)PO(OEt)(2)). The synthesis of 2 is also described.
