The selective synthesis of (Z)‐ or (E)‐3‐aryl/vinyl/alkylidene‐isoindolones, and 2‐benzopyran derivatives from o‐(1‐alkynyl)benzamides by means of a suitable choice of bases or silver catalysis is described.

3-benzotriazin-4(3H)-ones with aromatic terminal alkynes is described. Furthermore, a denitrogenative ortho-alkynylation reaction of 1,2,3-benzotriazinones with aliphatic terminal alkynes is also developed. The reaction proceeds through a five-membered azapalladacyclic intermediate with the extrusion of a nitrogen molecule. o-Iodobenzamide or its N-substituted derivatives 4-10 and terminal alkynes 11-17 reacted in DMF in the presence of bis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(II)chloride, cuprous iodide and triethylamine leading to (Z)-3-arylidene isoindolin-1-ones (22, 24, 27 and 28) or o-alkynyl N-substituted benzamides (I). The latter could be cyclised with sodium in ethanol in a completely regio and stereoselective manner to (Z)-3-aryl(alkyl)idene isoindolin-1-ones 18-35.

Pd-catalyzed 5-exo-selective oxycyclization/oxidative Heck coupling cascade is described, starting from readily available ortho-alkynylbenzamides and functionalized olefins. The key to a high regioselectivity in the cyclization step is the choice of catalyst and/or additives. Thus, Pd(OAc)2 provides the desired 5-exo products predominantly, whereas with PdCl2 or Pd(TFA)2, the corresponding 6-endo products
