Reactions of polyfluorobenzotrichlorides, benzotrichloride and α,α-dichloroperfluoroethylbenzene with sources of difluorocarbene and other dihalocarbenes lead to the formation of polyfluorostyrenes. Formation of polyfluorostyrenes is shown to proceed possibly by initial dihalocarbene insertion into the CCl bond of the benzylic position with subsequent dechlorination of the resulting product.

Model compounds related to the reaction products of perfluoroalkenes produced by the electron-beam irradiation of poly(tetrafluoroethylene) with dinucleophilic reactants have been synthesized. Such model compounds, in reaction with diphenols or diamines, give information relating to the mechanism of crosslinking reactions. Results obtained with perfluorohept-1-ene show that terminal perfluoroalkenes react preferentially with dinucleophilic reactants to give unsaturated ether and amide structures.

Copyrolysis of 4-chlorotetrafluorobenzotrichloride with chlorodifluoromethane (as the source of difluorocarbene) gave 4-chlorodifluoromethyl-alpha-chlorohexafluorostyrene, 1,4-dichlorotetrafluorobenzene, and 4-(chlorodifluoromethyl)chlorotetrafluorobenzene along with 4-chloro-alpha-chlorohexafluorostyrene. Possible routes for the formation of these products have been offered.
