  An aromatic o-hydroxyamide compound of the formula (I)    wherein the formula:    is a divalent aromatic group the formula:    R¹ = H, halogen, C₁₋₁₀ alkyl group, or C₁-alkoxyl group, Ar₁, Ar₂, Ar₃ = a divalent aromatic groups, X, Y = O or S, and n = 0 or 1, has an excellent ultraviolet ray-absorption and heat-resistance and is useful for enhancing an ultraviolet ray-resistance of polymeric materials, for example, wholly aromatic polyamide fibers.
