Alkenes were converted into α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds using excess of tert.butylhydroperoxide and catalytic amounts of chromiumVI oxide at room temperature. Fair yields and conversions were obtained from Δ5-steroids while allylicoxidation of acyclic alkenes was less efficient. Epoxidation of the double bond, sometimes observed, remained a minor reaction pathway.

The light-promoted oxidation of terminal alkenes by oxygen in the presence of catalytic amounts of palladium(II) complexes led to corresponding α,β-ethylenic carbonyl compounds and methyl ketones; rapid and extensive isomerisation of the starting alkene is observed. The effect of acetone as solvent on the efficiency of these oxidations is discussed.
Homogeneous chromium(VI)-catalyzed oxidations of allylic alcohols by alkyl hydroperoxides: Influence of the nature of the alkyl group on the product distribution
The chromium oxide-catalyzed oxidation of allylic alcohol - R1CH(OH)CR2CHR3 - by ROOH (R= t-Bu, PhCMe2) affords generally a mixture of R1COCR2CHR3 and R1CHCR2COR3. The rate of the reaction and the ratio between the two oxidized compounds both depend on the nature of R. It has been concluded that the oxidative species and the reactive intermediates contain this R group.
