The synthesis of a homologous series of 5-(4-alkylphenyl)isatin derivatives, as well as the crystalstructure and DFTstudies of the respective hexyl derivative are presented, constituting the first examples of a new family of supramolecular bilayer forming isatin derivatives, which reveal a new type of molecular strand—a molecular arrangement also supported by quantum chemical calculations.

The first mesoionic nematic and smectic A mesogens derived from sydnones that are characterized by both covalent and ionic features have been synthesized and evidenced by optical, calorimetric and X-ray diffraction studies.
Combinatorial parallel synthesis has led to the rapid generation of a single-compound library of novel fluorinated quaterphenyls. Subsequent automated screening revealed liquid crystalline (LC) behaviour and gave qualitative relationships of molecular structures and solid state properties.
