A broadly applicable group-4-based precatalyst for the hydroamination of primary and secondary amines was developed. Screening experiments involving a series of amide and urea proligands led to the discovery of a tetheredbis(ureate) zirconium complex with unprecedented reactivity in the intermolecular hydroamination of alkynes and the intramolecularhydroamination of alkenes. Reaction of (1-alkynyl)carbene complexes (CO)(5)M=C(OEt)C=CPh (1a,b) (M = Cr, W) with enamines R'(R2N)C=CHR " (4a-d) (R2N = morpholine) yielded carbiminium carbonylmetalates (-)(OC)(5)M-C(OEt)=C[C(=N+R2)R']C(Ph)=CHR " (5) by metathesis of the (N)C=C at the C=C bond. Compounds 5 are stable in solid state, but in solution they undergo a mutual exchange of the ethoxy- and the amino functionality to give isomers (-)(OC)(5)M-C(=N+R2)]C[=C(OEt)R']C(Ph)=CHR " (6), (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.
