Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Materials for Nonlinear Optics Applications

Three types of organic-inorganic hybrid materials were prepared by the sol-gel processable monomers derived from 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane with three different hydroxy-functionalized nonlinear optical chromophores. The measured values of NLO coefficient strongly depended on conditions such as poling temperature, poling time and heating rate. The hybrid films heated at 200 degreesC exhibited d(33) = 50-58 pm/V in Maker-fringe measurement. It was found that the thermal stabilities of the films were greatly enhanced as poling time increased and a poling temperature became higher. Also, we observed good waveguiding properties of the films at 810 nm and 1063 nm. The optical propagation losses of the films for TE mode were about 2 dB/cm at 810 nm and 0.5 dB/cm at 1064 nm.

An optical article is disclosed containing, for the transmission of electromagnetic radiation, a medium exhibiting a second order polarization susceptibility greater than 10.sup.-9 electrostatic units comprised of a linear polymer containing polar aligned noncentrosymmetric molecular dipoles having an electron donor moiety linked through a conjugated .pi. bonding system to an electron acceptor moiety to permit oscillation of the molecular dipole between a ground state exhibiting a first dipole moment and an excited state exhibiting a differing dipole moment. The linear polymer is a condensation polymer including in its backbone a plurality of molecular dipoles including sulfonyl electron acceptor moieties sequentially arranged to reinforce electron displacement along the polymer backbone.

Synthesis and Characterization of Photorefractive Polymer containing Multifunctional Chromophore

The main chain photorefractive polymer (PUA-M) having multifunctional chromophore was synthesized by the step-growth polymerization from N-hydroxyethycarbazole-4'-[6-(hydroxysulfonyl)]-azobenzene (Azo-2OH) and 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate. The molecular weight of the resulting polymer was determined to be M-w=41,300 (M-w/M-n=1.19) by the gel permeation chromatography using polystyrene as a standard, and could be processed into optical quality films. The thermal properties of PUA-M were detected by DSC and TGA. It shows a glass transition temperature of 183 degreesC and an initial decomposition temperature of 223 degreesC. The absorption maximum in UV/vis spectrum of PUA-M film was detected at 416 mn. The second-order nonlinear coefficient (d(33)) of PUA-M was about 27 pm/V. The studies into the detailed photorefractive properties for this polymer is in progress.
