The acute oral toxicity of /tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride (THPC) and tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium sulfate (THPS)/ is moderate; dermal toxicity is low. In short term (up to 28 days) studies in rats and mice, the main toxic effect for both THPC and THPS is decreased body weight. ... THE TOXICITY OF THE FLAME RETARDANTS, TRIS(2,3-DIBROMOPROPYL)PHOSPHATE, PYROVATEX CP, & TETRAKIS(HYDROXYMETHYL)PHOSPHONIUM HYDROXIDE (THPOH), WERE STUDIED IN A 30-DAY EXPERIMENT WITH GOLDFISH. AT A CONCN OF 1 PPM, THPOH WAS MORE TOXIC THAN PYROVATEX CP BUT LESS TOXIC THAN TRIS(2,3-DIBROMOPROPYL)PHOSPHATE. ALL FISH EXPOSED TO TRIS(2,3-DIBROMOPROPYL)PHOSPHATE WERE DEAD WITHIN 5 DAYS.
