  (Phenyl)[o-(trimethylsilyl)phenyl]iodonium triflate readily prepared from o-bis(trimethylsilyl)benzene and the hypervalent iodine(III) reagent [Phl(OAc)2·2TfOH] shows excellent formation of benzyne under mild and neutral conditions and efficiently provides adducts with typical trapping agents, e.g. furan, anthracene, diphenylisobenzofuran and tetraphenylcyclopentadienone.

  The reaction of 1,2-dibromobenzenes with chlorotrimethylsilane efficiently proceeded in the presence of Mg and LiCl in DMI under mild conditions, giving 1,2-bis(trimethylsilyl)benzenes in good to high yields. The reaction of 1,2-dibromobenzenes with chlorodimethylsilane under the same conditions afforded the corresponding 1,2-bis(dimethylsilyl)benzenes in high yields. Functional group transformations of 1,2-bis(trimethylsilyl)benzene were conducted to demonstrate the synthetic utility.

We have developed efficient, high-yield routes to functionalized 4-R-1,2-bis(trimethylsilyl)benzenes, starting from either 1,2-bis(trimethylsilyl)acetylene/5-bromopyran-2-one (2) or 1,2-bis(trimethylsilyl)benzene (1)/bis(pinacolato)diborane.
