Selective modification of serine and threonine containing peptides is accomplished by oxidation with lead tetraacetate. Conversion of the derived a-acyloxyglycine derivatives into α-alkylthio and α-halogenoglycine residues offers a novel synthetic route to modified glycyl peptides, enzyme inhibitors, and dehydropeptides.
